Why should I choose Hamilton Solar LLC?
Hamilton Solar LLC is a licensed general and electrical contractor (B-2, C-2) based in the Reno area. Because of our licensing, we can handle all aspects of your solar installation from start to finish regardless of your unique challenges. Our partners have over 35 years of experience in the high quality home construction industry, and 6 years designing and installing hundreds of solar electric systems ranging from residential to large commercial systems. Due to our experience, Hamilton Solar is the only contractor in the Reno area with a direct relationship with all our suppliers. All of our solar panels are purchased directly from the manufacturer, allowing us to pass the savings on to you.
Solar Electric Systems do have a high upfront cost. However, most Hamilton Solar customers are able to achieve real savings in the first year because of our relationships with our suppliers and our financing programs. We only use the highest quality materials and workmanship and install them for a fair price.
How long will the system last?
Hamilton Solar designs and installs systems with only the highest quality materials. Our solar panels all carry a 25 year warranty, and the inverters all carry a 10 year warranty (extended warranty available). Due to our installation process we expect most systems to last 30-40 years with minimal maintenance
Will the utility buy back extra power?
Yes – in a way. While the utility won’t write you a check, Nevada’s net-metering laws require the utility to give you a credit for each kilowatt hour you put back on the grid. These credits can be used at night, or in the winter when you aren’t producing as much power. A well designed system will produce 80%-90% of your annual usage to allow for lifestyle changes and energy efficiency in the future.
How much space does the system need?
The amount of space depends on what size system is installed. Some systems require as little as 150 square feet, while a typical 5 Kilowatt system will need from 300-500 square feet depending on whether we use high efficiency panels or mid-line panels.
Do the solar panels need to be mounted on my roof?
No – while installing on the roof is the most common location, many people prefer to install them on the ground. Our design experts will work with you to determine the best location for the system to make sure you are maximizing your production.
Do the panels need to face south?
While due South is usually best, panels installed facing Southeast, East, Southwest or West still generate a very high percentage of power. For aesthetic reasons we typically install the panels in the same plane as the roof, rather than “cross-rack” the system which many consider unattractive. If you’re not sure what direction your roof faces, a Hamilton Solar design expert can take a quick look via satellite to help determine if you have a good location.
No. While the panels are made of tempered glass, it is quite strong. They pass hail tests, and are rated for snow load of 49 to 113 pounds per square foot depending on the manufacturer. Reno average snow load requirements are 20 pounds per square foot.
How much solar electric power do I need to power my home?
Each home is different, and the amount of electricity you use is very dependent upon your lifestyle and how your home was built. As part of our design process we work with you to identify easy changes that can reduce your power consumption. We also can provide a full and detailed energy audit to identify other areas where you can save money.
How much power does the system produce?
Systems for a home vary in size from 2 Kilowatts to 10 Kilowatts and larger. In Reno, each kilowatt produces about 1600 kilowatt hours with average panels, with SunPower systems producing as much as 1775 kilowatt hours.
What happens when the utility has a power outage?
Most systems we install are “clean” systems, without batteries. For firefighter and utility worker safety these systems do not generate power when the utility is out, even if it is sunny. We can install a battery backup system if desired, but these systems typically add $10,000 – $15,000 and will require battery replacement after 10-15 years.
Do I need batteries with the system?
Batteries are only required if you want backup power when the utility is out of service. Without batteries, the system will not store power, and for safety reasons cannot produce power without the utility in operation.
What happens if the panels get covered by snow?
Solar electric panels need sunshine to generate power. While some sun does make it through several inches of snow, little electricity is generated when the panels are covered with snow. Due to the nature of electricity (resistance), once a little sunlight reaches the panels they typically heat up, causing the snow to melt faster and allowing your system to produce power quickly without the need to remove the snow.
Do I need to install a new roof before the solar panels are installed?
Solar panels will last many years (over 25). Because of this, we recommend the roof be in decent condition with a remaining life of at least 10-15 years. Once the panels are in place, they will greatly reduce the wear on the roof by blocking ultraviolet rays and keeping most snow and ice off the roof, greatly extending the roofs life. If you require a new roof as part of the installation, Hamilton Solar will work with you to find a roofer and integrate our installation into the new roof.
What happens if the panels are shaded?
PV panels should be installed in areas where they get significant shade-free sun every day. Even small amounts of shade can significantly reduce the output. Our designs and installations also seek to minimize the impact of any shade issues through selection of the proper equipment and good engineering.
Do I need to clean the panels periodically?
Most of our customers should expect to clean their panels once or twice a year. However, if you are in a dusty area (very near a busy dirt road, very urban area, etc.) you may see a performance gain from cleaning the panels monthly. Usually just rinsing the panels with a garden hose is all that is needed.

If I sell my property, what effect does PV have on the sale price?
Energy conservation and renewable generation adds value to a home. Surveys have shown that for every $1,000.00 saved per year, $20,000.00 is added to a home’s value. Solar energy can be one of the best home improvement investments you make.
How long does it take to install a PV system?
Typical residential systems take from 2 to 5 days to install. Systems mounted on the ground and systems with batteries are more complex, and may take longer. Most of this time is spent outside your house, so there is little disturbance to you. Commercial systems take several weeks to over a month to install, depending upon size and type of installation.
